Cloth Diaper Dictionary
Here are some common words you will see in the cloth diapering world all cleared up for you!

PUL - PUL, otherwise known as polyurethane laminated fabric, is a lot more technical than just a plastic backing on fabric. The original application is the medical field, and it is still used for this purpose. Like cloth diapers, it is used to replace disposable products with reusable. It provides the waterproof barrier needed in the medical field that can survive multiple institutional washings. The laminate can also be autoclaved, which is a very high heat steam sterilization process, to make it safe for reuse even after it comes into contact with blood or other bodily fluids.

One Size Diapers are designed for babies from birth until they weigh approximately 40 pounds (at SmallSprout™). One size modern cloth diapers are generally constructed as a pocket style diaper with either an adjustable insert or with two sized inserts. The one size diaper is adjusted using snaps on the front of the diaper to fold down or lengthen the diaper rise according to your baby's needs, making it convert from newborn (sometimes) to small to medium to large with just a change of the rise. One size diaper can also be found in an AIO, pocket and a fitted style.

All-In-One (AIO) - Ready to use waterproof diaper, with the absorbent insert material sewn in for quick and easy changes. Just like a disposable only you wash and reuse! The easiest diaper to understand, and easiest to transition to from disposables for most parents.

Pockets - Diapers with a rear opening for insert stuffing; typically with a PUL layer. A very practical and popular choice for cloth diapering mom’s today. Probably the most popular diaper style on the market. I offer my fitteds with a pocket also unless specifically requested otherwise.

Fitteds - A super absorbent anytime diaper. Requires a waterproof cover. I will say, that I use fitted primarily, and you do not need a cover for around the house use. I only use a fleece cover (occasionally a PUL cover) for sleep and outings during warmer months. These make the best overnight diapering system in our opinion.

Contours - Somewhere between a fitted and a prefold. These diapers work great for newborns and help expand your stash economically. Typically contours do not have a Velcro or snap closure, so you use the traditional pins or "snappies". Requires a waterproof cover. I am definitely willing to make contours if requested!

Covers - Waterproof layer for use with fitteds, contours, prefolds and other non-waterproof diapers. Covers can be made of wool, water resistant fleece or PUL to name a few.

Doublers - Added absorbency without added bulk. These trim additions can be paired with an insert or laid inside a diaper for a little extra protection for nap/bedtime or heavy wetting babies.

Fasteners - For diapers that don’t have snaps or velcro-type closures, fasteners may be helpful. These can be the traditional diaper pins we remember our mom’s and grandma’s using or nifty little gadgets like the Snappi (pictured).

Inserts - Main absorbent material for your diapers. This can be made of many different thirsty fabrics like microfiber terry, flannel, bamboo and hemp.

Other Accessories - These are things can help make the cloth diapering experience as trouble free as possible. Items include helpful tools like diaper pails, pail liners, deodorizers, travel bags, wipes, and many, many more!

Prefolds - The basic “get the job done” diaper! These may take a little more practice to get used to, but are a super absorbent, economical cloth diapering option. Also make great folded inserts and burp clothes! Requires a waterproof cover.

Sposies - Short for disposables.

Wicking - Moisture escaping the waterproof layer of a diaper or cover.

Touch Tape® - A hook-and-loop fastener that is much stronger and longer-lasting than the widely-available Velcro®. SmallSprout™ uses touch tape® brand faster on on all diapers with such requested closure. Velcro® tends to break down in the many washing diapers undergo.

Flushable Liners are a thin, flushable fiber (think... dryer sheets) that can be placed between baby's bottom and the cloth diaper. They allow moisture to pass through the liner to the diaper, but are designed to contain the baby poo for easy clean up. Pick up the entire flushable insert and flush away baby's waste down the toilet. Some flushable liners can be washed and reused 2-5 times before breaking down. This is especially handy when baby's diaper is only wet and not muddy. Popular brands include; Kushies, Bio-Soft, Imse Vimse, and Bummis just to name a few.

Wet Bags are waterproof bags that are used to hold dirty cloth diapers until you return home or until laundry day. A small wet bag should be kept in your diaper bag to hold 2-4 dirty diapers while you are away from the home. They have a Velcro ® or zippered opening to contain odors. Large wet bags can be used to hold 6-9 dirty diapers for a full day or overnight at Grandma's or Dad's house.

Wraps are used to make Fitted Diapers, Contour Diapers, and Flat or Pre-fold Diapers waterproof. They are form fitting and are secured over the diaper. They have gathered leg openings and adjustable closures (hook and loop). They are made from a variety of materials (PUL, fleece, wool, organic cotton), depending on the brand. Similar to traditional pull-on "rubber pants", modern cloth diaper wraps are made of higher quality, softer material, have a trimmer fit, and have adjustable closures for a secure fit, allowing flat, prefold and contour diapers to be held in place without a diaper pin or Snappi®.

Polyester Fleece - Polyester fleece is a synthetic fabric. This fiber will keep moisture contained. Polyester will not absorb, but instead traps moisture between its fibers.

Stripping - This is what needs to be done to your diapers to remove laundry detergents and other types of residues and buildup. if your diapers are wicking and repelling liquids, if they have odor problems, or your baby is getting lots of diaper rashes you will need to "strip" your diapers.
